Will There Be a Mass “Tech Exodus” in Seattle?
The CEO of Redfin, Glenn Kelman, recently asked the question in a feature for GeekWire, and though “he’s convinced skyrocketing housing costs in thriving coastal cities will lead to a ‘mass migration’ of companies and talent to smaller cities in other parts of the country,” which begs the question, will there be a mass “tech exodus” in Seattle?
According to Kelman, Seattle does serve as an example of tech giant’s growing preference for finding less expensive markets, given that they are searching for a second corporate headquarter location. He adds, however, that he “expects tech workers to move to Seattle from other thriving coastal regions like the Bay Area, New York, and Boston.” Kelman also cites the recent tax reform bill as a factor that makes Washington state appealing, and says it will only “accelerate this migration.”
